Course Title BOHS P601 Initial appraisal and thorough examination and testing of local exhaust ventilation systems
Description This module is designed to provide the student with a thorough understanding of the principles and role of Local Exhaust Ventilation equipment (LEV). Candidates will be taught on how to carry out an appraisal of an LEV system and to establish whether a system works effectively and controls exposure to substances hazardous to health. Practical work will include the setting up of a typical LEV system, testing and record keeping and advice and remedy of faults. This module is seen as essential for Managers and Supervisors of Asbestos removal contracts.
Pre-Qualification There are no Specific pre-qualifications.
Duration 4 Days including practical and exam
Syllabus Outline

Principles of good practice.
Hazard identification and Risk assessment
Types of ventilation systems – general and local
Design principles of typical systems
Measurement and testing of LEV systems
Measurement instrumentation and techniques of use
Legal requirements – COSHH and other Regulations
Record Keeping
Other health and safety considerations

Educational Objectives The student should understand the complex nature of exposures in the workplace; appreciate the basic principles of workplace control and the type of approach that is required for successful implementation of a control programme. The student should be able to understand how to relate the outcome of a risk assessment to selection of control options
Assessment The student should understand the principles behind the operation of ventilation systems. He/She should be able to carry out measurements to check the effectiveness of the system. The student should also understand the limitations of this approach to control and of the crucial importance of the design element at the interface with the worker.
A practical assessment carried out by an independent assessor.
Examination A 45 question exam paper with a maximum time allowed 1 hour 15 minutes will be undertaken on the final day of the course. This exam will be independently invigilated by BOHS and is subject to a separate BOHS exam fee.
Certification P601 Proficiency certificate Initial appraisal and thorough examination and testing of local exhaust ventilation systems.
